Decrypt (crack) Encrypted disk image (dmg) files

I set myself up with encrypted sparseimage file a few weeks ago (as an alternative to filevault). Because this was supposed to be super-secure, I created a brand new password based marginally upon my standard password. I subsequently forgot this new password.

I was lucky, though, because I remembered what I would have done to this password (preface, postfix, letters -> numbers, etc). It ended up being few enough permutations to be reasonable but too many to try manually.

Basically, I just set up some arrays for the positions which may differ. I loop through these arrays, concatenate together a password, and try it. Everything is written to the terminal, so you just look for the entry with the very obvious success message.

If you're in a similar situation, you can modify the following script to crack your dmg file.


This perl code assumes that your default password is 'hello', and that you might preface or postfix it with nothing, 3, or #, and that the l's might become L's, 1's, or !'s.

This was good enough for me, though it would be a lot better if stderr were redirected to null, the return code was tested, and it only printed the successful password.

    Hello,

    I’m kinda in the same situation, and the data on my diskimage is all my 3 years of work!
    I absolutely don’t know any coding languages, neither perl. I downloaded ActivePerl&Komodo, but as I don’t know how to use, I cannot run your script on my machine.
    Is there an easier way to use it or to decrypt my disk image? John the ripper doesn’t work, too complicated, spent 11 hours to trying to unshadow and can’t even load a password hash:)

    Ayca –
    Not having looked at john the ripper for about 5 years, I don’t think it’ll necessarily work. It’s for account passwords, not diskimage passwords.
    So… you need to figure out if my code would even work for you. Do you have any idea what the password is? Is it a permutation of something? Do you know that it’s 7 letters long, and you know the first 3 and last two letters?
    Basically, my code will go through every single combination, given some hints on where to look. It’d take too long trying a “full” password with all possible characters (A-Z,a-z,0-9,)-!,etc,etc), but can handle a few unknown letters.
    If that’s the case, I can help you further. If not, good luck elsewhere.

    Actually this morning, after spending 11 hours for nothing with JTR and sending you this message, I finally could run your script in terminal. As I didn’t had any idea of the necessary commands, I made a deep internet search to find a perl-for-dummies like document to find out how it works. Now I made some configurations, and trying to crack my dmg file. Unfortunately, I’m not sure of the length of the password, but I know that it’s not shorter than 7 characters and there are some numbers on it. I have some configurations that I use every time, so I’m trying with.
    I don’t know what I was thinking when I set such a weird password. I hope that’ll help me. Anyways, thank you for sharing your script, this is the most helpful document that I could find on the whole internet.

    Ayca - could you post your step-by step to get this script to work in the terminal? I’m starting out at the same level as you - messed with JTR for a while, and now I actually need to get at a dmg I made ages ago, with a password that’s probably between 20 and 35 characters. I’ve got a good idea what it is but I don’t know what permutations I spun on it, and macKrack only goes up to 10 characters. . .
